“To allow others to make you feel bad is to allow others to
have control over your life.” ~Victor Schueller
Sometimes people can say or do things that are hurtful. The truth of the matter is that most of the
time, people don’t realize that what they did or said was hurtful, because most
people don’t intentionally do things to hurt people’s feelings.
There are, however, times when people don’t know how to
handle being uncomfortable or how to handle adversity in their lives, so they
resort to ineffective problem-solving strategies. When young children don’t know how to solve
their problems or feel uncomfortable, they usually resort to throwing
themselves on the floor in a temper tantrum until someone (they hope) comes to
their rescue and gives them what they want.
As adults, we would look pretty silly throwing ourselves on
the floor in a tantrum, so we do other things, like slam doors, ignore people
so they know we are upset at them, avoid eye contact, say things that are
hurtful, or exclude others from activities, while letting them know that others
are invited.
Remember that you are in control of your life. It’s not your fault that others don’t know how
to handle their problems. Don’t let
people shirk their accountability and responsibility by placing it upon
you. Remember, when you feel that
someone is taking out their difficulties on you, it is not your responsibility
to accept their abuse.
You are in control of your own life, and don’t let your life
be ruined by someone else!
Let’s choose to accept responsibility for our own
difficulties and problems, and let’s choose to not accept responsibilities and
difficulties of others! Make yourself
happy! Don’t let someone else dictate
whether you are happy or not. You are in
control!
Have a great day!
