“Why should I care what other people think of me? I am who I am. And who I wanna be.” ~Avril Lavigne
I had a conversation with someone yesterday that prompted
memories of my time practicing health care, and I wanted to share that with you
today. Whenever I had a new patient, and
I was outlying the findings and recommended care plan, I always ran the
following phrase through my mind: “I care, but I don’t care that much…” By having this mentality, I didn’t invest too
much emotionally into a patient who didn’t value their health enough to follow
through on the care of plan in the event that they didn’t continue care after a
few visits. It was very helpful at the
time.
The same can apply to our dealings with people in our lives,
be it personal or work-related.
Sometimes we place such an emotional investment in caring about what
other people think of us. While we
should care what other people think of us, we have to be careful that we don’t
care “that much.”
We are who we are, and we shouldn’t change our behaviors for
fear of what others may think or to put others' happiness before our own. We can't make everyone happy anyway, so why not at least make ourselves happy?
Be proud of who you are, and you’ll find that you’ll be
loved and valued by others as a result!
Have a great day!
