Are you rock solid on your commitments? |
How often have you said to someone, “We should really get together sometime soon,” only to find that six months pass before you get around to arranging another meeting between you and that other person? I know I could certainly be found guilty as charged of committing this act...
One of the ways we can communicate in an accountable and responsible way is to leave out “exits” when making commitments to others. Statements such as “I will try to get it done,” or “I’ll give it my best shot,” or, as demonstrated at the beginning of my post, stating a willingness to meet with no firm date or plans established leaves us with the ability to shirk responsibility for any commitment, if it were to happen that we couldn’t deliver on our promises for any particular reason.
Be accountable in your communication. If you really can’t do something or don’t care to do something, say it in a respectful way. If you can do something and are willing to do something, commit to it, set it in stone, and follow through and deliver. I will commit to putting this into practice, and I hope you will too!
Have a great day!
Best wishes,
-Victor
