What's in it for me?

Does this apply to you?

When you do something polite for a stranger, such as holding the door open for them, do you do it with the expectation that the stranger will thank you for your kindness?  Are you disappointed, or think the stranger is rude if they don’t thank you?  Are you being polite because you want something from them in return for your kindness?

Do you function under the premise that you are willing to give one hundred percent, while expecting nothing in return?  If not, why not try looking at why you do the things you do.  An unselfish mentality and willingness to help unconditionally can improve your relationships and open doors of opportunity to you.

Something as simple as giving your time to listen to someone who is going through a difficult time is a great place to start.  Give it a try – see how many great things you can do with unconditional unselfishness.  You’ll be surprised to find that others will follow your lead and spread the goodwill forward to others (and it may even come back to you!).

Oh, by the way, it doesn't hurt to say "Thank you" when someone does do something nice for you. :)

Best wishes,

-Victor
