This is what happiness looks like, apparently! |
Did you know that by simply being happy, you have the ability to affect someone else's happiness profoundly within a one-mile radius?
A study was performed by the Harvard Medical School and the
University of California, San Diego, and found that happiness is a “collective
phenomenon that spreads through social networks like an emotional contagion.”
According to the research, when someone becomes happy, a
friend who lives within a mile experiences a 25 percent increased chance of
becoming happy. A co-resident spouse
experiences an 8 percent increased chance of becoming happy, and siblings
living within one mile have a 14 percent increased chance. Next-door-neighbors experience a 34 percent
increased chance of becoming happy!
But it doesn’t end there – the study showed that a friend of
the friend who was influenced also has a 10 percent increased chance of being
happy, and a friend of that friend also has a 5.6 percent increased chance of
being happy as well!
You may think that negativity had a more powerful
opportunity to influence people, but that’s not true, according to the
study. Sadness does not spread as
powerfully as happiness. That’s great
news!
One more thing – the study showed that this “happy” effect
can last for up to one year! Even
better!
So now you know – you harness tremendous power within
you. You have the power to make someone
else happy, simply by being happy yourself!
As “Honest Abe” Lincoln was quoted, “Most people are about as happy as they make up
their mind to be.” Let’s work to choose
happiness! Let’s help others be happy
too!
Have a great day!
