“No one can make you happy or sad or excited or angry
unless you give them that power over your life. Nothing has any power except the power that you give it.” ~ Marshall Sylver

“Nothing has any power over me other than that
which I give it through my conscious thoughts.” ~ Anthony Robbins

the pain is not due to the thing itself
but to your own estimate of it; and this
you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ~ Marcus Aurelius

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you felt intimidated by someone or by circumstances in which you found yourself? Did you know that your feelings of powerlessness and inferiority were entirely within your control at all times, and the intimidation you felt was not the product of the person or circumstances? As a matter of fact, it is actually your choice to let yourself feel intimidated!
Let me explain…Let’s say you encounter an individual who is aggressive and dominates a conversation or tries to intimidate others to get what they want. This person is no more or less a person than you. You have the same amount of “power” as they do. If you can visualize the worth or power you possess and the worth or power the other person possesses as sitting on a balance, the power would be evenly balanced.
If you make the decision, however, to surrender some of your worth or power to the other person, you are giving them permission to intimidate you. You are giving them permission to take away some of your self-worth and your power, and when this happens, you feel inferior and intimidated.
Self-talk can be a helpful ally in these situations. Preparation is the key…You need to prepare yourself ahead any foreseeable intimidating situation, reminding yourself that the power a person has over you is the power you choose to give them. You can simply use the quotes I provided above as your script for self-talk.
I used to use this self-talk frequently while in my post-graduate studies, when it was obvious that some of my professors liked to use intimidation tactics and power plays to test my resolve and confidence. I can’t tell you how much of a difference this made for me. While I respected my professors tremendously, I didn’t give an inch of power to them, and it was huge for maintaining my feelings of self-worth and self-esteem. I knew that they had no power over me.
Remember, you are completely in control of your feelings! You ultimately have a choice in how you feel, and how you allow others to make you feel! Plug into the ultimate power source – you!
Best wishes,
