“They may forget what you said...but they will never forget how you made them feel.” ~Carl W. Buechner |
As much as we try to convince ourselves otherwise, humans are emotional beings. One of the major misconceptions that people are under is that we are logical beings, and we operate out of reason and logic. While we try to separate emotion from fact, when it really comes down to it, we are truly emotional beings. While we may or may not respond to the words we hear, we will always respond to how others make us feel.
The next time you are trying to communicate with someone, don’t underestimate the power of the emotions your words evoke when speaking them. As you conclude your interactions with others, ask yourself, in reflection, what emotion you left the other person with. Did you leave them with a good, warm feeling?
Much as we try, we absolutely cannot separate the emotion from the words we speak. Words are not just words, and we have to remember that we are accountable for the impact our words have on others.
Let’s work this week to be mindful of the potential impact our words have on others and how our words make others feel. Have a great week!
