One piece of technology that has really come on in recent years is the personal GPS (Global Positioning System). Most of you know what it is -- a device that uses satellites to track its location, and it is used to provide navigation to people as they travel...
Having a GPS now (finally), I have a great sense of confidence as I drive to an unfamiliar location, because I know that the GPS, as long as it doesn't run out of power, can get me to where I want to go. At the very worst, I know I can get back home. Basically, I don't fear getting lost anymore (and by the way, I did stop and ask for directions when I was lost...Ask my wife, Shelly).
When I think of my confidence in finding my way into new territory pre- versus post-GPS, it's remarkable the difference...I just think how difficult it would be if I had hand-written directions, only to find a bridge out, or an unsuspected detour. How would I find my way to my destination? The GPS provides me with a very clear plan on how I will make it to my destination, and even knows how to redirect me if I reach an unforeseen detour.
When it comes to our own lives, do we even have a destination that we wish to arrive at someday? Do we have a one-year, five-year, or ten-year plan in place? A place we want to be by then? Something we want to accomplish by that time? One of the best ways we can ensure that we reach our destination in the future is to make sure we set achievable goals now, and put together a plan on how we're going to get there someday. Much like navigating without a GPS, without a clear plan in place of where we want to go, we lack the confidence needed to reach our destination. While we may eventually reach our destination, it may take us longer than it would have if we would have had a plan in place or set goals beforehand.
So when you think of where you want to be, think about what goals you want to set today to help you get there. Your future life is one destination that you can reach without a GPS. You just need to set some goals to help you get there.
Best wishes,
-Victor
